Kids Can Ask the United Nations to Help Turtles

In fact, last Halloween, Johnny wore his green sea turtle costume for a visit
to the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT, where he met a loggerhead.
And equally as important, Johnny is helping STRP in our fight to protect
endangered sea turtles and the marine environment.

“I think we should save the sea turtles because they are endangered and
some of them might become extinct before I get to middle school - like the
Leatherback. That’s not fair, because they were here before we were.”

This spring, Johnny presented the plight of endangered turtles and whales
to his student council to get permission to sell turtle necklaces at his school to
raise funds for their protection. He also wrote out turtle (and whale) facts that
were read on the morning announcements at school every day for a week.

Johnny also was part of the student contingent that hand delivered peti-
tions and letters to the United Nations to urge immediate action to protect the
Pacific leatherback sea turtle from longline fishing. Johnny is a great example
of a kid making a difference for the sea turtles.
