A new paper by fisheries scientists and conservation critics published in the journal Biological Conservation reveals that the Marine Stewardship Council certifies fisheries that are not sustainable, bordering on bluewashing.
The researchers reviewed 19 formal objections to MSC certifications and found that only one was upheld. Turtle Island Restoration Network's formal objection to the certification of the Atlantic pelagic longline fishery was one of the objections that was denied despite its high take of sea turtles. It is listed in the study, but not examined in detail.
